Volunteers needed for RCMP musical ride performance
The Comox Valley Therapeutic Riding Society (CVTRS) will host one of Canada’s most recognized icons, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride, next month.
Mounties will perform evening shows Aug. 13 and 14 at the Comox Valley Exhibition Grounds.
The event is expected to bring about $50,000 in much-needed funding to this non-profit organization that helps over 600 individuals each year. However, in order to successfully run the event, Therapeutic Riding needs about 50 more volunteers to assist with event parking, setup and takedown.
“Every aspect of hosting this special event is being handled by a large core of volunteers,” explains event co-ordinator Angela Walker. “We have people who have stepped up to help with ticket sales, food preparation and sales, site setup and cleanup, parking, and more.
“A big advantage to volunteering is that you have an opportunity to watch the Musical Ride for free. For safety reasons, parking volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.
“As we know from hosting this event in the past, it is an amazing experience for people of all ages, both volunteers and spectators alike.”
Parking volunteers are needed to start their shifts at 3 p.m. on the Tuesday and Wednesday. Setup volunteers are required at 11 a.m. on Monday and to assist with teardown on Thursday at 11 a.m. No experience is necessary.
The RCMP Musical Ride represents a colourful Canadian tradition.
The troupe of 32 horses and riders will perform a variety of cavalry drills choreographed to music.
“Working through a unique medium, they support the RCMP community policing efforts throughout Canada.
While the RCMP troupe will arrive late Aug. 12, members of the public are welcome to drop by the Therapeutic Riding barn to meet the horses and officers during the day Aug. 13 and 14.
The ticket gates open at 4 p.m. to the souvenir tent, food concessions, seating for the evening performance, CVTRS raffle tickets and much more. All proceeds will go the CVTRS.
The two evening performances are scheduled to start at 6 p.m. CVTRS is thrilled to have Kenny Shaw on Aug. 13 and Sue Medley and the Back Road Band on Aug. 14 as the pre-entertainment before the Musical Ride performances.
Tickets to the RCMP Musical Ride cost $10 in advance, $12 at the gate (children six and younger are free). Tickets are available in the Comox Valley at Roxanne’s Fashions, Blue Heron Books, Whale’s Tale Toys, both Royal Bank branches, the Coastal Community Credit Union (Ryan Road branch), RCMP (800 Ryan Rd. in Courtenay) and online at www.sidwilliamstheatre.com
