Mount Washington ski patrol ready to be sent into action
There is snow on the local hills and the 130-member Mount Washington Volunteer Ski Patrol Association, which recently completed its annual training weekend, is well prepared to assist Mount Washington Alpine Resort with its safe ski and board program.
New this season to the volunteer association is the Junior Patroller Program, which is offered as a credit course through the Qualicum School District to students aged 16 to 18. Ten junior patrollers were recruited for this season and will be partnered with a senior patroller at all times.
All volunteer patrollers have a minimum Level III Industrial First Aid or equivalent ticket with many members bringing to the association either very advanced medical and rescue skills such as advanced life support personnel, air force search and rescue (SAR techs) or have combined skills and up to 30 years experience in patrolling. The association members are recognized on the hill in their red jackets displaying a distinctive white cross. Members, other than the 10 students, are professionals from the community who donate their time and significant skills in assisting the resort’s program for pro-active risk management and to provide rapid response to any situation that may occur within the resort’s area boundary.
