Wrasslin’ benefits Comox Valley kids

Island Charity Wrestling presented its annual charity family wrestling show in the Comox Valley recently, benefiting two children’s charities.

It was close to a sellout and, although fewer than 100 showed, it was a very hot crowd and those that did, many of which were children, were treated to some great wrestling action featuring ICW’s amateur lineup in 12 matches including all four championships up for grabs.

Main event matches saw “Dangerous” Doug Beattie (DDB) defeat Splash Campbell for the ICW Championship after Campbell’s longtime tag team partner Big Daddy Pain turned on him in an unforeseen double-cross.

The Vancouver Island Tag Team Championships remained safely in the hands of the Chain Gang as, represented by Acadian Assassin and Explosive Claymore, they retained their belts by purposely disqualifying themselves in shameful fashion over the challengers The Agents of Brutality.

Chris (The Sickness) Slade prevailed over Matt Havik in a four-man elimination tournament of Port Alberni talent to become the first ICW West Island champion.

A 12-man over-the-top-rope battle royale for the Vancouver Island Charity Championship came down in the end to Major America and Taco, with Taco finally hurling his opponent over the top rope to the floor to win his first championship.

The most anticipated and brutal championship match featured four-year champion the Acadian Assassin defending his Vancouver Island Hardcore Championship against Big Willy Johnson in a “fans bring the weapons” hardcore match. This savage contest featured every weapon imaginable and fought not only in the ring but also the audience and parking lot.

“Big” Willy did what some thought impossible by finally ending the evil Acadian’s long reign at the top by pushing him off the top of a ladder through a table and pinning him to win his first ever title, and the first person other than Acadian Assassin to hold that title since 2008.

Mid-card matches had Cooter Johnson prevail over the Bumbling B; Major America defeat Taco by submission with his USA lock finisher; The Wrestlin’ Rocker Zed Leppelin beat Hillbilly Black in a Rock v.s. Country grudge match with his flying reverse elbow finisher; A-Train beat The Green Mist by countout; Magnus Hunkström pinned Mexico’s Biggest Canucks Fan Juan E. Cañuck with his frog splash finisher; while Safety Man and Ivan Boneyard failed to advance in the West Island Title tournament.

The final tally of profits produced a donation of $610 to You Are Not Alone (YANA), earned through ticket sales, raffles, and programs. YANA provides accommodation for families of children in the Comox Valley School District who need medical care on the Lower Mainland.

The President’s Choice Children’s Charity took in $245.20 through store manager Shawn Rondeau’s concession table by donation. That’s $855.20 raised to help local children in need.

ICW thanked the wrestlers who trained hard and put themselves through immense punishment for entertainment and charity including Tim Chaisson, Doug Beattie, Brad Campbell, Joe Johnson, Kyle Hopkins, Clay Toresdahl, Gord Kopre, Terry Mitchell, Rob Petrie, Neil Blackmore, Derek Peacock, Andrew McLoughlin, Ken Sundström, Chris Slade, Andrew Campbell, and referees Dave Goodall and Lawrence Ball.
